Deciphera Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Announces Orphan Drug Designation from the EMA for DCC-2618 for the Treatment of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors

November 28, 2017 at 7:00 AM EST

WALTHAM, Mass., Nov. 28, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Deciphera Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:DCPH) a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on addressing key mechanisms of tumor drug resistance, today announced that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has granted orphan drug designation (ODD) to DCC-2618, the Company’s pan-KIT and PDGFRα inhibitor, for the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST).  According to the American Cancer Society, in 2015 approximately 5,000 patients were newly diagnosed with GIST in the United States and estimates for 5-year survival range from 48% to 90% depending upon the stage of the disease at diagnosis.

“The EMA orphan drug designation is a key regulatory milestone that will further facilitate and accelerate our clinical development of DCC-2618 for the treatment of GIST,” said Michael D. Taylor, Ph.D., Deciphera’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We believe that DCC-2618, which previously received orphan drug designation for the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, has the potential to serve as a much-needed therapeutic option for these patients.”

An orphan drug designation from the EMA allows a pharmaceutical company to benefit from incentives from the EU to develop a medicine for a rare disease. Applications for ODD are examined by the Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP), which adopts an opinion that is forwarded to the European Commission (EC). The EC then decides whether to grant an orphan designation for the medicine in question within 30 days of receipt of the COMP opinion. Pharmaceutical companies that obtain ODD benefit from a number of incentives, including protocol assistance, a type of scientific advice specific for designated orphan medicines, and market exclusivity once the medicine is on the market. Fee reductions are also available, depending on the status of the sponsor and the type of service required.

About Deciphera Pharmaceuticals
Deciphera Pharmaceuticals is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on improving the lives of cancer patients by tackling key mechanisms of drug resistance that limit the rate and/or durability of response to existing cancer therapies. Our small molecule drug candidates are directed against an important family of enzymes called kinases, known to be directly involved in the growth and spread of many cancers. We use our deep understanding of kinase biology together with a proprietary chemistry library to purposefully design compounds that maintain kinases in a “switched off” or inactivated conformation. These investigational therapies comprise tumor-targeted agents designed to address therapeutic resistance causing mutations and immuno-targeted agents designed to control the activation of immunokinases that suppress critical immune system regulators, such as macrophages. We have used our platform to develop a diverse pipeline of tumor-targeted and immuno-targeted drug candidates designed to improve outcomes for patients with cancer by improving the quality, rate and/or durability of their responses to treatment.
